Bengaluru Centenarian breaks hip, starts walking after surgery

Shamanna (103) broke his left hip bone after a fall on September 4 and was brought to HOSMAT the same day. On Saturday, he started walking as usual. He was operated upon by Dr Thomas Chandy, Chairman and Chief of Orthopaedics, Hosmat, along with Dr Rajashekar.
At HOSMAT, 38 patients aged between 95 and 100 years have successfully undergone surgeries for hip fractures since 2012.

Dr Thomas Chandy said “On September 5, Shamanna underwent surgery, Bipolar hemiarthroplasty. Broken hip and thigh bone fractures are either operated by changing the ball or plate and screw depending on the site of the break. He was awake during surgery and chatting a lot. Now, he is out of bed, standing without pain. He started walking on Saturday.”
Shamanna will be discharged in a couple of days and is in good spirits. He credits his recovery to his staple food ragi mudde, which is healthy and rich in calcium.
“As our population ages, normal life expectancy in few elderly people is over 90 years. The incidence of hip fractures per annum is increasing rapidly. These patients present many challenges to doctors, both in terms of medical co-morbidities and orthopaedic complications,” said a hospital statement.
It further read, the mortality and morbidity of hip fractures are well recognized and mortality is high. However irrespective of age, it is necessary to surgically fix the hip fracture, to relieve pain and to be able to turn the patient to avoid bed sores and for patients to get out of bed without pain.”
HOSMAT has also operated on four patients aged over 100 with broken hip bones. An average of eight-ten patients aged over 90 are operated here every year, despite most of them having serious cardiac arrest, it added.

After undergoing surgery for hip fracture, 103-year-old man back on his feet - Dr. Rajashekar K.T

When Shammanna, 103, broke his left hip bone after a fall last week, his family never thought he would be active again. But doctors at Hosmat hospital gave them hope and successfully operated on him. The result: Shamanna was on his feet on Friday.

Dr Thomas Chandy, chairman and chief of orthopaedics, Hosmat hospital, operated on the centenarian along with Dr Rajashekar.

At 103, K. Shamanna, resident of Akshaya Nagar in Bengaluru, is a man with grit and determination.
After suffering a broken hip bone during a fall on a morning walk on September 4, Mr. Shamanna did not hesitate to undergo a Bipolar hemiarthroplasty, a surgical procedure that involves changing the ball in the hip joint. Post-surgery, he is doing well and doctors are preparing to discharge him.
Thomas Chandy, Chairman and Chief of Orthopaedics at the hospital, along with Rajashekar, joint replacement surgeon, who operated on the patient, said it was quite unusual for someone at 103 to not have diabetes, hypertension or any other medical condition.

“He is hale and hearty. He was chatting all along, even during the one-and-a-half-hour long surgery,” Dr. Chandy said. H is out of bed, standing and walking without pain, the doctor explained.
